I recently purchased a 68 AMX and found piece of metal with numbers attached to the underside of the hood. It says “Group No 12 001. 4486910”. Does anyone know what this means?
Thanks

Part number for the hood, most likely. I'll take a peek in my Parts Book to see what exactly Group 12.001 refers to (Group 12 is Hood, Front End kinds of parts).

It could mean the hood was replaced with a AMC Part's Department hood. I just looked at my original 1968 AMX hood, original paint, original hood insulation and there is no "piece of metal with a part number". I am the second owner. Where is the piece of metal with the part number on your hood?

I’ve tried to attach a photo and cannot. It looks like a metal bracelet wrapped around one of the openings under the hood

Don,
Some of the genuine AMC replacement sheet metal had embossed metal tags with the part number. I assume this was more durable than a paper tag or a piece of numbered tape. The parts books shows Group 12.001 is the hood. Part 4486910 is for a 1969 AMX. For 1968 they show part 4485494, but it says to refer to the price list. In the price list it say to use 4486910 and order two 4003556. These are described as 1-1/4 inch long hexagon bolts. It is likely the hood was replaced at one time.

My 73 Javelin AMX cowl induction hood has a flat metal loop attached to it , I always thought it was to hang a old school trouble light hook from , have to look for numbers .

Without consulting my parts book, I believe the 1 1/4" bolts would be used to attach the hood striker loop to the hood. The 68 hoods used fine thread bolts where the 69 hoods used coarse thread bolts. So when fitting a later parts dept. hood to a 68 you needed new striker bolts.

For sure, replacement hood! Just an interesting tag, that most of us don't have! |
