Dropped my gas tank today to repair the sending unit. While inspecting the inside of the tank I found a big glob of lead. Someone melted some lead into a puddle and put it in the tank.
Anyone have a good explanation for this? I know this isn’t technically an electrical question but repairing an electrical component lead me to the question so don’t roast me too badly…

Was the tank ever repaired, like brazed or soldered? May be a drip of the repair medium. How big a piece is it? Or maybe someone wanted to sabotage it under a prior ownership (if you're not the original owner). It would roll back and forth and make noises that couldn't easily be found.

Maybe somebody thought that the chunk of lead would slowly dissolve into the fuel and act as a tetra-ethyl lead substitute!

Or someone got the tank very hot when trying to solder in a filler neck and just kept feeding in the lead based solder until they could see the bead at the top of the neck. Probably using an old bar of solder or even body filler lead bar.
The lead substitute, could be one of those old home brew things you read about when they were announcing removal of lead from fuel:)

The White70JavelinSST had a couple little hunks of 50/50solder (50% lead 50% tin). The car had ot been messed with before I bought it. (purchased in March of 1972) The chunks of lead in the tank are from the factory. They used 50/50 solder to solder the filler neck to the tank. What you found was spill over from the factory process. Nothing to worry about, just get it out and forget about it
