I'm gonna ask a rookie question, I'm building a completely stock 390 and when do you install the dipstick? Before the oil pan and heads? After? What is the proper position? I don't want to put everything together and have to take it apart. I've built plenty of modified AMCs and with headers I've installed them with no problems, stock I'm a rookie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Scramboy.

I always install the dipstick tube just before the pan. I'll test the tube's location and make sure the dipstick goes in the oval shaped cutout in the pan's baffle. If you install the pan first you might have the dipstick hit the top of the baffle. Looking at the engine from the side the tube should lean forwards a bit so the tube bracket bolts to the valve cover. This is my Machine's 390 -Steve- |

Like Rebel Machine said, it needs to go thru the oval hole in the pan baffle. I install the tube with the dipstick in it to to be sure it passes thru the hole. I've done it this way many times after the pan is installed. Bob tufcj
