Drop the tank and make it right. There's no shortcut for that. Sounds like it won't be easy, but that doesn't make it avoidable...

If you pull the sending unit get a strainer for the end of the tube. Then you can leave it where it is. It just sits like 1/4" off the bottom. This is a replacement made for Jeeps, so as close to AMC as you'll get! Ford and GM used similar filters that will work also. The one below is for a 5/16" line -- stock for Rambler/AMC.

Galvin's has an inexpensive kit with sock and the funny square O-ring for the sender.

When I had the '60's tank down for cleaning and renewal, I managed to take a photo of the pickup sock and sender float inside the tank, resting where they belong. This is the same tank as in 1961 through 1963, not 1958, but it's pretty similar I assume?
