It was strictly a plug in. same size and threads as the original AMC speedo.

Can you provide info on the shifter.  I never cared much for the somewhat plain OEM shifter on my 69 AMX.

That's a stock '70 shifter.

Very creative solutions !
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.
