Yes, my tranny came out of a 1982 spirit 6 cyl. SOOOO, it should be a 998 lockup tranny, correct?

also, do you happen to know the gear ratios for the "wide ratio" 998

I'm not sure if you can put a lockup converter in a non-lockup trans or vice-versa without bad things happening. Of course the lockup won't work. I wouldn't try it.

Lockup and nonlockup converters do not interchange. Design of input shaft is different, LU with a pilot, NOLU with no pilot. Also spline count difference, 26 versus 27.

1979 TSM   904 is 4 and 6 cyl, non LU.
998 is LU and is V8 only
1980 TSM
All 4 cyl use non LU 904.
2WD 6 cyl use 904 LU.
Eagles use 998 non LU.

Gear ratios for all above is  2.45, 1.45, 1.00.

1982 TSM
All 4 cyl use non LU 904. All cars including Eagle.
2WD 6 cyl use 904 LU.
Eagle with the 6 cyl use 998 LU..
Gear ratios....
2.74, 1.55, 1.00.

I do not have a 1981 TSM

This is assuming your car is original.
I have had a 1979 AMX, and it had a 1974 998.
Also had a 1982 spirit with a 258, and the 904 was out of a different car and non LU

And the spline count is different between the non LU and LU. And they dont interchange.

as long as both are LU. But be careful.  Some are hi stall and others are not.

Thank You.

I have a converter being built for a 998 LU that is 3200 stall. The original tranny is out of an 82 spirit 258. I was told it was a 998 LU but I wanted to know just in case it was a 904 LU
