Ok, I definitely decided at the beginning when I first heard about packing the oil pump with vaseline that I was going to pack it, I thought about what it would do and it seemed to create a presence of something in-between the gears that would cus like a suction, maybe kind of like a empeller and pull oil into it.

It seals the gaps between the gears and housing, and between each other sort of like water might seal a suction cup against something. And, unlike grease, it dissolves easily in oil and melts. It's not a solvent so won't harm seals.
