You can check for an intake baffle without removing the intake. Remove the PCV valve and stick a screwdriver down in the hole. If you hear a loud tink at 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" down in the hole, it is there. The valley pan gasket is probably another inch deeper, and it won't make a loud tink when you hit it. This is for a stock intake. I'm not sure of the depth with other intakes, although they may be similar.

I have several AMC engines, 6 and 8 cylinder, stock and modified, and none use a detectable amount of oil between changes. Maybe a few drops, but I can’t see it on the dipsticks. I don’t think oil consumption is normal. If it is not excessive it is tolerable but not normal.

There are so many "it depends" on oil consumption. It was extremely common to add oil between changes back in the 70s- even the TSM says something about it's not unusual for additions of oil between change intervals depending on........" or words to that effect. Owners manual states "a consumption rate of 1,000 miles per quart is not excessive" (a quote from 1973 Javelin owner manual)
That translates to 2 pints in 500 miles being not excessive. However, on a newly done engine with new rings and modern machine shop methods, I'd sure hope it was well below that. |

And as far as the PCV valve goes, try one of these it'll be worth the couple of bucks: # FV164 = FRAM # FV164DP = FRAM {#FV164} # V164 = STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS # 6P1011 = AIRTEX |
