There are some decent videos on youtube targeted toward muscle-car stainless trim.  I had visions of just polishing it out by hand, but tried some compound(s) on a short piece and it looked a little better, but still no shine.  The videos have some tips on getting out dents, but I tried on a scrap piece and failed miserably.

This is with the trim removed - forget it with it still on the car.

I ended up picking up some buffing wheels at Lowes and Black, Brown, and Green polishing rouge at Harbor Freight.  I followed the sandpaper recommendations on the videos 400, 600, 800, then by hand only: 1000, 1200, and 1500.  Then hit them with a different buffing wheel for each rouge.  I had a couple of pieces that had been professionally done and I got pretty close to the same results.  I might have gotten there with a final pass with the White rouge?  The whole process is very tedious and incredibly boring as I spent at least a couple of hours on each piece.  I still have some scratches as I didn't get them sanded deep enough.  If you get it shiny enough to start seeing the scratches, back to the previous grit (or more) to get the scratch out and start over.

Overall, I satisfied with the results.  The buffing wheels were only around 1'" wide - 2" wide would probably have worked better.
