Are the 401 service blocks any different than regular production blocks?

Well I’ll take a stab and flack for trying to clear the issue as far as I know. The “Service Block” with no number cast on the side was a 1970/71 401 casting with a 4.040” bore. The factory warranty “Service Block” was a 1970/74 304, 360 or 401 casting with numbers – regular block but bores not finished. Then there is the “Race Block”. It was a 1970/71 401 casting with 360 or 401 on the side. 4.040” bore and the mains were under sized for line boring later. Please feel free to correct any mistakes! |

There are several different versions of "race" blocks out there. How many have you seen with no cavity between the main cap surface and the pan rail at the dipstick location? I've seen 1 out of a dozen different race blocks cast that way. Then you get into different deck thickness as cast and bore.

Other then pictures, I've only seen one "Race Block". The cylinder wall thickness was almost to the point of wondering if the water jacket would actually flow enough coolant.
The Mechanic at a dealership raced his 70 AMX and the dealership picked up the cost of racing. He didn't care if he blew a motor. The race block is the block still in the car that has not been raced/moved since 1986, when the dealership shut down and he lost his job. Stored in a nice dry heated indoor place for the last 35 years.
