Have to replace the rear main seal on the 401 (will remove the
engine from the car) and thought while I'm there, replace the main bearings, if needed. Q1: Having read other posts regarding rear main seals, it appears that SCE makes an acceptable/ effective seal--are we still in agreement? What about Mahle? Also, a buddy recalls (back in the '60's!) that he used a "main bearing roll out tool" to R & R the main bearings in his Plymouth Max Wedge. Q2: If the crank isn't coming out, is there such a tool for AMC engines? I've searched and discovered nothing. Edited by bikerfox - Apr/14/2021 at 10:20pm |

If you've searched you've found what a commercial one looks like. But you can make them from a piece of brass brazing rod that will fit in the main journal oil holes.

It takes 4 to 6 hours to pull the motor - if you have the tools. I attempted this just once, wasted 2 days and ended up pulling the motor anyway.

Cotter pin with the head flattened out rolls them in. If you slightly loosen all the main caps you can do it with your fingers.
