I can tell you that if you DON'T get the trans input shaft and crank aligned nearly perfect (as noted, only 0.010" offset allowed... not much more than the thickness of a sheet of paper!). You will rip the center of the clutch out! I had this happen on a six, but doesn't matter what engine. The dowels had sheared off the block, which came from a wreck. For some reason I didn't notice -- just bolted the bell on (from a different trans). There is more than 0.010" clearance in the bolt holes. It worked fine, but after 40-50 miles started making a little noise, and after about 100-150 miles the center of the clutch broke out from the slight binding. That's probably the LEAST that will happen, depending on how far out of alignment you are. If it's much more than 0.020" or so there will likely be binding in trans itself, the input bearing at least. So you could ruin an input bearing and possibly the shaft, or the connection between the input gear (first gear?) and the rest of the gears inside the trans... There's a good chance it won't shift though, which would indicate a problem well before any permanent damage was done.

Following....I just picked up a nice BW WC T5 for my American. I have the pedals and z-bar assembly, I'm going with the Jeep bell, a decent clutch and a steel billet flywheel (not much choice with a 290). I'm using the centerline shifter position, it should be pretty close to the opening for the console shift automatic that's in it.

Hi, I am new to this forum. I was thinking of putting a T5 behind my 1969 / 290 AMX which is now an automatic. What year Jeep bell howsing would i need and from what engine? My first car in high school was a 69 / 390 4sp AMX and I just bought this one a few months ago and it feels great to drive it but I don't care for the auto trans. TD

Take a look at these threads. In the first one the guy mentions "SB" and "BB" AMC engines, but he just didn't know that all the 67-91 V-8s are the same, regardless of size. Must have been used to working on Chevys! The second thread is newest and probably the better of the two. |

There are two Jeep CJ bells, 81-86 for T4/T5/SR4, and the multi-bolt 76-86 T4/T5/SR4/T176/T14/T15 The 258, 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, and 401 all have the same block to bell bolt pattern. I'm using stock mechanical linkage to the bell. |
