Hope you solved the problem. If it's the voltage regulator you can get a plug-in electronic replacement. This one is listed as Chrysler, but should fit AMC applications. Year-One sells on and lists it for Chrysler and AMC. Check the placement of the terminals on your original. If they look similar it should work. Or you can "roll your own" easy enough:

Thanks for sharing, I purchased one from Rambler auto parts ( http://www.ramblerparts.com/catalog.php ) for $40.00
I will update after I take the dash out, currently working on replacing the hydraulic lifter , one had disclosed the retaining clip resulting in a bent pushrod |

Hope that the bent pushrod wasn't the result of the piston pushing the valve out of the way
