Hi all, I am in the process of changing the heater core in my 1981 Spirit. I have the dash apart and am having trouble removing the heater core housing assembly. The TSM is not much help. Anyone out there removed a heater core housing assembly that can offer suggestions?

I removed the heater box on my 79 AMX recently.  I was removing the interior anyway, so you may not need to do what I did, but will give you something to think about.

Removed, the package tray, glove box, removed screws the hold the dash to cowl and brackets that bolt it to the passenger side by the A pillar.  You will also need to remove the kick panel.  After everything is disconnected from the box, (ducts, cables, hoses, etc.) you will need to pull the box out from the inside.  To get it to clear the dash, you need to pull the dash out towards you and lift up.  That will enable the box to come out far enough to drop down.

Ok, I work slow, but it sure took me a lot of time.  I suggest you make notes along the way to enable the correct replacement of stuff.  I've worked on a lot of my vehicles in my life and never came across a heater box that was so time consuming to remove.

Anyway, the joy is in the journey, right????  Good luck!

Thanks Victor,
I finally got the heater box out. The TSM did not mention a third nut on the firewall engine bay side. I ended up removing the entire dash as I am replacing the tach, the radio and the heater core.
You'd think AMC said, we have this heater box, let's build a car around it.
