Found some old posts on this topic. Think it should be gl5  compatible for limited slip applications. Appreciate all of the info.

We are talking gear oil. Many manual transmissions, differentials and transfer cases call for gear oil.
The grade system for gear oil is the same.
The link I posted was for limited slip differential oil.

The cautionary approach, if you do not know what the manufacturer recommends or are dealing with a modified drive train, is to use a GL4 gear oil of the correct rating that also meets GL5 requirements.
There are quite a few differentials and transfer cases with bushings/spacers installed and they are likely bronze or bronze/composite, i.e. yellow metals.

Examples would be Mini's, Toyota's if they replaced the needle bearings, some GM's that have had bushings replaced ...

What is the metal flake in some limited slip clutch friction plates, I don't know, but I'd say play it safe.

Just my opinion.

There's no "yellow metal" in an AMC 20 differential, which is what the OP asked about.

GL-5 is what you need. Pick your brand; I like Mobil 1.
