I have an AMC Radio(don't know the year) its AM no buttons just the 2 knobs. Wires coming out are confusing-speaker wires are green/black with a plug(those are easy). There is another plug with purple/white stripe, black and orange/black stripe wires coming(never seen 3).  Need to know the power wire so I can hook it up in the 77 J-10. Thanks

Do you have a simple volt / ohm meter ? If you do then you can easily determine what the purpose of those three wires are using the ohm meter's, Rx1 function. The black one is most likely ground, and should show a 0 ohms reading to the radio case. The purple/white one is most likely the power lead for 12 volts and the other, most likely the orange/black, is the dial light.

What george w says.

Also, the radio power wire will be infinite ohms (no connection) or large-number of megohms (digital meters always say something) when the radio volume knob is clicked OFF, and some non-zero value when ON.

If worse comes to worse, take the cover off the radio and do some wire tracing.  With only three wires I would think it would be straightforward, one has to be power, one is probably the light, the third, who knows.  But it shouldn't be that big a deal.
