I need to replace the temperature cable/heater valve cable on my '72 Javelin with A/C. I've had the dash pad off before, but how do you get to the back of the Weather Eye to replace cables? From what I remember, it doesn't look like an easy job, even with the dash pad off.

Thanks for the response. Did you have to remove the light toggles, gauges, radio etc?

Well, I dug into it and can now answer my own question for any others who may want to know what is required to change a humpster cable. Actually, this will only help you with the TOP (temperature) cable.
I took out the dash pad and lower passenger-side plastic, and the metal plate behind it that stretches from the center section to the right kick panel. I also removed the passenger kick panel, then loosened the screws under the ash tray that hold the glove box to the floor. Fortunately, the cable I need to replace was the top one, and with the glove box loose I was then able to move the glove box to the right enough to access that cable. If it had been any of the other cables I would have had to take the center section completely out, which looks more involved as I wasn't having any luck budging it without the risk of breaking some of the (fragile) plastic. I was also able to access the vacuum pump that sits on top of the evaporator (controls the dash vents) which had quit working, and I have another one on the way. LOTS of screws (around 35, I think) but not a hard job. Taking the center section and Weather Eye out completely would be another matter. If anyone knows how to do that without breaking things, please feel free to post it below. Edited by CamJam - Jan/08/2021 at 7:19pm |
