How do I determine which differentials came with my 1972 CJ5 4X4 with a 304 V8 and 3 speed manual trans?

As long as it's original, the front is a Dana 30, the rear is a Dana 44. Both will be what Jeep referred to as "narrow track". Google the shape of the diff cover and match them up. Dana 30 will have open knuckles (you can see the u-joints in the axles). Dana 44 has kind of a diamond shaped cover with 10 bolts. Bob tufcj

Yes - all original.
Thank you Bob, good to know. Was the gear ratio the same for all 1972's as well? Only one option?
If not, I'll look for a tag to find the gear ratio. Edited by Nor Cal CJ5 - Mar/24/2020 at 11:12pm |
