Can the radiator be removed while leaving the a/c condenser, dryer and hoses in place? I need to install a fan shroud and hate to have to disrupt my newly installed a/c system. Looks like the condenser mounts to the body of the car rather than to the radiator, but I can't be sure.

I removed my 7 Javelin radiator many a time leaving the a/c connections in place. A/C lines are passed along the sides of the radiator, so the only thing needed to move out of the way was the upper support baffle, and fan shroud.
The most difficult part is removing the composite fan shroud. I found removing the belts and slinging the shroud back over the water pump allowed enough room to pull the radiator up and out. Yes the condenser mounts forward of the radiator at the bumper side. Considering how little room was available with how things are placed, over larger body cars, the Javelin became my favorite body to work on... though I would do things then that I would not do now. Once I removed the hood and front bumper and valence to do some work that required a lot of bending, without removal of engine and what not, as to get a better leverage, since I am tall. Now removing all the unnecessary stuff, can male for unexpected damage. Edited by 304-dude - Dec/15/2019 at 11:23am |

Just take the fan and spacer (if it has one) off. That's usually enough room to get the shroud in and out without removing or draining the radiator. You might have to loosen the belts too. Sometimes you can get away without messing with them.

Thanks for the responses guys. Good to know that I don't have to mess with the a/c fittings.

Well, turns out my fan shroud is from a '74 Matador coupe, so it's deeper and hits the PS pump, compressor and crank pulley. Trying to decide now whether to sand it down where needed or to get the right one.
EDIT: Cut it down where needed and we're good to go. Sanding discs made short work of it. Had to remove the radiator, probably because of the extra width of the Matador shroud, but that wasn't a big deal. Previous owner must have removed the rubber flap in front of the radiator since the staple holes are there, so I'll get a new one made in the next couple days. I wonder if there should be weatherstripping between the radiator and the shroud? There's a pretty good gap there too. Edited by CamJam - Dec/15/2019 at 8:02pm |
