I recently sold my 1966 Rebel, 327, 4 speed (some of you may have seen it in St. Louis). Anyway, the buyer is not happy with the factory shifter. So, is it the same shifter as was used in other years and is there someone that rebuilds them? Thanks, Dean cell 701-205-6906

I dont have my service manual with me, I think the torque tube cars have a shifter that mounts to the crossmember. I dont know if the mechanizum is similar to newer ones or not.

I just checked my 66 and my 68 TSM and they show the exact same shifter for a 4 speed. However, I stopped at the shop and looked at the shifter and it is different than what the TSM shows. Help!

That 4speed shifter was.only used in 65-66 Marlin Classic and Ambassador. It is mounted to the floor directly under the Console. The 66 American and Rogue are different.

It's a variation of the older Twin-Stick shifter. Mounts to the floor, not the transmission. I don't think you can get rebuild kits for the 65-66 AMC big car four speed shifters, but I'd check with Galvin's. Like all shifters it will get sloppy with wear, so if there are bushings that can be replaced that will definitely tighten it up. I don't expect it would be as good as a Hurst, but better. You need a 65 TSM -- it shows the correct shifter. The 66 just has a "representative" pic, and it's the American shifter, not the big car... at least that's what I gather from your comment, I haven't looked. A Hurst or other aftermarket shifter will work. Some work will have to be done on the console and floor where it comes through though.

I thought I would add to this post rather than start my own... I have a 1966 990 4 speed, it has a broken plastic reverse lockout lever and it gets locked in reverse, and you have to use pliers to shift it out of reverse at the trans.
I am going to attempt to rebuild the shifter and make a lever from aluminum. After remembering stories from when I was a little boy about the Rambler having a "Corvette" shifter, I started researching parts and designs. The 1963 Corvette shifter resembles the shifter the closest, with some obvious differences. I am going to document the rebuild over the next few months... Wish me luck! eckler Corvette has some parts and I got the last avail parts from Galvin's...
