WOW ! ! ! Strut Rod Fix This thread began in 2016. Finally there is some closure to it for me. I really like what Western Red did with the OpenTracker kit for Mustangs. If enough of us contact OpenTracker with a request for Delrin Monoballs that fit the AMC strut brackets, The cup washers look OK. Just Delrin Monoballs with the correct hole and thickness would be all that's needed to adapt the kit to AMC. They already make some suspension components for AMC cars, why would they not be interested in making a strut rod monoball bushing set for AMC cars. Contact them at opentracker@sbcglobal.net Request that they look into it please. |

I sent an email to Doug at Opentracker. He responded within an hour. I sent a link to the Strut Rod Fix thread on the forum telling him how Western Red adapted their monoball for a Mustang to fit an AMC He stated he would look into it and see what he can come up with. I think that is encouraging news. Contact OpenTracker and let them know you're interested. opentracker@sbcglobal.net and Yes they do have other parts already for AMC. |

Please forgive me, I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to give an update. I emailed opentracker racing this morning asking about their progress for the AMC spherical joint for the strut rods. Sounds like they are coming out in the relatively near future.
He wrote back... We are in development of the strut rod bushings. We are doing the drag race testing now. If the testing goes well, it would be 4-6 weeks for them to be on the web site. |

GreyshoundsAMX has provided a thread on his work with OpenTracker. He has helped with R&D work with designing around AMC. His thread is informative for one who has the tools and skills to make them work on AMC. |

I have a modified set on my 1968 AMX. The strut rod bushing hole opening is slightly larger and thicker on the Fords. I turned down the derlin to fit in the stock AMC opening and made spacer washers to take care of the thickness issue. They work exceptionally well, no complaints so far after about 2000 miles.

I don’t understand the statement: “Ideal for street performance or racing classes where the steel rod end style strut rod is not allowed.” The photo of the product in use shows the steel strut rod and how would you use this kit without it?
The amount that the lip of the bushing protrudes into the bushing hole in the mounting bracket is very small - how would you turn them down? The stock strut rod is intended to deflect to simulate an ‘A’ arm in conjunction with the actual front lower control arm; Delrin is harder than rubber, so how are these an improvement over stock?

Steve Obertanec originally helped John at Open Tracker Racing with adapting the Mustang mono ball strut rod bushings to the AMC brackets. Steve runs them on his bracket race Gremlin with much success. I later contacted John about a full front suspension, and he had lost his machinist who was making the spacers for him to adapt the Mustang kit to AMC. I enlisted Kevin Fontenot (stickshifter) to help make a revised spacer kit that we mocked up on my 74 Javelin AMX. Kevin now supplies John with the adaptor spacers for these kits. My Javelin has the full roller bearing front suspension and mono ball strut rod bushings from Open Tracker. So far it is silky smooth and quiet on the street and has amazing weight transfer and suspension travel, using "90/10" drag style shocks. The car is prepped for "stock appearing" drags, but has no track time yet. I know of a few other AMC's with this suspension as well that have only seen street driving and have been very pleased with the ride quality. Edited by n2ojoe - Nov/13/2022 at 7:13am |
