Picked up my heads from the machine shop today. Man they look nice. All new valves, guides, exh. seats, springs, keepers and a three angle valve job. They pained them a dark grey and it looks nice, but I'm planning to paint them red to match the rest of the engine.

I did find a small medallion the shop glued on the exh. manifold side, guess it's an overheating indicator for warranty purposes?

Heads looks sharp!! Are you building a stock engine or mild build? Those (heat tabs) Are for warranty purposes just in case the owner ever overheats their engine that might damage the head (warp) them which the shop can use that against you. The center part melts at I believe 250 degrees so don't ever overheat your engine!

...this thread should go in the 'member project' section? where we just show what we're doing?

I knew a machinist who used to do something similar. He'd weld something to the block that would fall off if the engine was overheated. Basically a tattle-tale if someone brought the engine back claiming it was faulty.

pretty much a stock build, going to use a Eddy 4bbl. and put duals on it. That's seems to be the general consensus on the gen1 engines.

The little disc is a heat tab. If the temp goes over 260 or so, the center melts out leaving the ring. We used them for warranty issues on newly rebuilt engines, and also as an indicator for down the road when something needs rebuilt again. If they come in on old heads, we know they've been previously rebuilt.   If they were melted, we know that the motor was overheated, and inspect accordingly. If the heads were aluminum, we might recommend using a new casting.

Gas engines use the 260 heat tab, diesel about 235.

Tip on reassembly.

The rear head bolts are specific. They provide rocker shaft oiling and are drilled.

Common mistake is that they are positioned in the wrong opening and you have no oil for the shafts.
