I have made a working switch from 2 broken ones for 68-69 AMX/Jav. The shaft was locked-up/broken on one and I don't recall the details, but there was some kind of cam-like affair in the section of the rotation to turn it off that was broken in the other. Looks a little sketchy as you have to carefully bend the housing out/back-in to hold it together. Just keeping it for a spare, but have fully tested it with a motor and it seems to work fine.

The upshot of all this is to NOT throw away a bad switch. It; most likely can be repaired. Just as an FYI, 1967, 68 and, possibly 69, big body cars: Rebel, Ambassador, Marlin with electric wipers also used an electrically identical switch. I would assume parts can be swapped around between the various versions to repair a faulty switch.

Several years ago, I stumbled upon these two switches at a local AMC cruise. I was not 100% sure of the 1970 switch but took a chance and purchased both. (Not cheap) The 1970 Switch has been used as a guide for modifications to the 1972 Hornet switch. Obviously, the stem housing is different (flat side) but the stem housing and threads are exactly the same length as the 1970 switch. The center stem is longer which is the only issue. I measured the stem length and cut the Hornet switch to length of a 70 Javelin. It took a few hours, but I used a flat file to create the flat side in the stem and to create the large notch. I used a modeler file (1/4 wide & 3 inches long) to create the small notch. I had to keep test fitting the wiper knob until everything fit. The two switches in the photos are the last switches I have sitting around. Because the 1970 Switch is so difficult to find, using the Hornet switch made since at the time. There are alternatives if you have the switch. There are vendors that can repair a switch. I am aware of several friends that had worked performed on non-AMC switches for rebuild and proper operation.

Ok... Here's the differences. This is to dispel any rumors. First, let me say that for all practical purposes all of these switches work the same and have the same connections. With a little work, you can use different year switches for any year car.
This first pic is an overall pic. Starting left to right is an original 70 AMX or Javelin switch. It is short, like a Hornet switch but the stem is shorter than a Hornet switch. The second switch is an original 68/69 AMX or Javelin switch. It is longer than the other switches. Third up is a 70/71 Hornet switch. It is the same length as the 70 switch but the stem is longer so it would have to be cut down to be used on an AMX or Javelin. Last up is a 72 Hornet switch. Although it is very similar to the other switches, it can be easily identified by the stem tube's flat sides. Sorry about the condition of this switch. I had it apart for repairs. 70 AMX or Javelin switch... Part # 355 3761 68/69 AMX or Javelin switch... Part # 360 1621 70/71 Hornet switch..... Part # 361 5829 72 Hornet switch... Part # 365 7636 |

70 uses the shorter shaft switch. The 68-69 switch is a bear to find, the 70's have become like hens teeth.
