Ok, will chrome spray paint the chrome bits. I've gotten pretty good with that stuff, you just have to make sure to clear coat it or else dirt and finger prints ruin it.

The SEM Color Coat product looks like a great plan so long as it holds up and doesn't wear off like crazy. I'll definitely get myself a can and try it out. They have some blues that I think will work well, or at least look better than the terrible olive green I have now.
It shows up on the O'Reilly's website, so if I can get through them, that will be great. |

SEM products will hold up providing that they are applied after proper cleaning and prepping of the plastic. If that is not done, they like anything else are not very good at lasting very long. I have used them over the last 15 years to either clean up or change the color of the interiors of the cars I have been building for myself. My Fuel Injected spirit was initially a Burgundy car with a badly damaged Red interior. The objective was to turn the interior into a two tone Brown and Tan. I found a Tan interior Spirit I was able to get major interior panels from to replace the damaged ones, and for all of the brown pieces including the console and arm rest along with the optional gauge package installed? I did not care what color they were, they were going to end up brown along with the visors. And in 1999 that is the way they were. 16 or so years later and some 50,000 miles the Brown parts show no indication of what color they were in the first place. Of course the Tan ones are still OEM. I also used them to freshen up the 1980 AMX with a Black interior and add the optional package tray also painted, rear seat back shells for my Mark Donohue and bits and pieces of things. I am in the process of getting ready to freshen up the Blue interior of my Sportabout including re-dying all the pieces obtained to replace damaged ones and/or to repair parts damaged by he sun. The product is good and does what is claimed providing you do the prep work requested to get "r" done. |

I think the chrome spay looks pretty decent, but when I use a clear coat, it turns more of a dull silver.

Instrument specialties/inc did mine on the "Donohue"and I am very pleased with the results $344.50 for all 3 rings. You do get what you pay for, just my opinion.

I've used SEM and Tower APS paint, plus interior paint from Amark. They're all around $25 a can for custom blended paint. In my case, I'm re-doing a saddle tan interior and after using the expensive stuff I decided to use some Dupli-color interior paint at O'Reilly's and found that it was actually quite good, just as good as the more expensive paint and it was only $7 a can. As has been already stated, I've also found that the prep is more critical than the actual paint used - clean the part with warm soapy water & let air dry; use an interior cleaner spray such as SEM sells and wipe off with a clean cloth; spray on an adhesion promoter from SEM or Dupli-color and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes; lastly, spray on several light coats of color letting each coat dry in-between. Do this and you'll get great results.
Remember, most parts from the factory were molded in a standard color (usually black) and then painted to match the interior and those paint jobs lasted years. Edited by sweatlock - Oct/16/2014 at 8:39am |

This comes from the model car/airplane hobby.
Metal Masters Metalizer. There are several different metals that can be duplicated including chrome al masters metalizer The above link is supposed to read Metal Masters Metalizer. There's a video too, of how to do it. The stuff works pretty good for what it is, but obviously the best method is have the parts re-plated. Duplicolor makes a plastic and vinyl spray dye that was a dead match to my interior. I'm giving that a shot.
As for the chrome bits, I'm trying rim paint. It's a two-step process of silver and clear, and came in a complete kit. It's more of a silver metallic flake paint than a chrome, but it should work great for the small accent lines I'm using it to cover. |
