I have a 1969 Ambassador I am parting out, and I have a 1970 Rebel SST I am bringing back to life. I was hoping to put the 1969 Power Brake Booster into the 1970 Rebel, ...AMC changed the Booster in 1970, Master Cylinder is the same though! I am still going to try this, I took out the Booster from the '69 Ambassador today, but I have not made the trip to the Rebel (it is an hour away from where I live) since taking out the '69 Booster.
Does anyone know if this can be done, ...before I start messing around I figured I should probably ask you AMC veterans before proceeding with this idea, ...any advice or words of wisdom? Many thanks!

To elaborate a little bit on the question, ...in case the brackets are different, I also removed the Power Booster Brake bracket on the firewall from the 69 Ambassador, any response to this would be greatly appreciate BEFORE any attempt gets made, ...I know the Brake Booster on the 1970 Rebel does not function, so it does need to get replaced.

The booster should be interchangeable although the mounting bracket may differ if there was a firewall design change. Most any 67 and up boosters will fit any full size AMC car including AMX and Jav. The American booster and non disc brake boosters were smaller.
I took a complete 69 disc brake system from an Ambo and put it in my 67 Rebel with zero fitment issues. Edited by amx39068 - Sep/16/2012 at 9:48am |

According to Hollanders Classic Interchange, if the Ambassador and Rebel both have disc brakes, the power brake booster is interchangeable. Actually that booster also fits '68-'74 AMX, late '68 to '70 Ambassador, late '68 to '71 Javelin, '72-'74 V-8 Javelin, late '68 to '70 Rebel. All of these applications are with disc brakes.
Hope this helps.
Later!

I appreciate the reply gentlemen, thanks.
How-ever, I have drums all around on both cars.
As an after-thought, I realized that if the brackets are different I'll posibly might have to swap the brake pedals as well then.
Why all this bother you may ask? ...well, I cannot locate a Power Booster for the 1970 Rebel, American Parts Depo has one, but it is for disc.
What does Hollanders Classic Interchange say about drums?

That should make it even easier. The drum booster is the same for an American, AMX/Jav, Ambo, Rebel, Hornet, etc, etc, etc.
In other words, any drum booster should do the trick. If you want, you can send your existing booster to either me or directly to Arizona Brake and Clutch and they will rebuild it for you and make it like brandy new. |

Hollanders shows a different model for drum brakes. I do not know why, I am just reporting what they say.

Disc brake cars generally used a booster that provided a bit more boost than drum brake cars. You can run the drum booster with no problems, it just doesn't have as much boost as the typical disc booster. The drum booster is much better than manual disc brakes though! It's better than in between manual and factory booster. By feel, the drum booster gives about 3/4 of the boost the disc booster does. I actually liked it better, had more feel. Late 60s-70s US made cars always had very touchy power brakes IMHO. Little girls and old grannys had no problems stopping the big cars though!
