    Posted: Sep/16/2010 at 9:47pm
Hello all. I am adding an original Rambler radio to my 1966 American 440 sedan. The car is originally a radio delete car, but I gotta have some music. My question is what size speaker works with the original radio? I would also like to know how the speaker is held in place originally. I looked in there, but didn't see anything that the speaker could attach to. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As far as "what will work with the radio" - lmost any physical size as long as it's 8 ohm (I think that's correct on OEM) and not intended to handle 100 watts.
For what will fit the car - The originals were oval shaped, what, 4x6 I believe? someone have the correct size for the original opening?
In the dash I believe they screw up under the top of the dash, on some there's rear speakers in the rear deck screws go into tinnerman nuts on the speakers if I recall.
Been a while since I've been into the dash on those early ones - someone will have great detail for you here..........

The factory speaker is held in place with a bracket (one end goes into a slot in the dash, the other is held in place with a single screw). The factory speaker is also very shallow with a tiny magnet (nice warn sounds, but not close to being musically accurate) and I don't think the bracket will work with an aftermarket speaker.

I used to have an extra radio and speaker I sold several years ago. I don't know if I have any pictures of it or not during the process of selling it. I will take a look and post them here if I do.

I believe the original speaker was 4" X 10".

I pulled my extra dash frame out today while cleaning the garage and the speaker is for sure 4 x 10. I couldn't find any pictures of the speaker and bracket I used to have but here are a few that show where the bracket attaches to the dash.

Basically, the way it works is that the bracket is under a little bit of tension to hold the front in place and it just has the one screw in the back. I know it seems a bit cheesy but it works well for the factory speaker and it doesn't squeak or rattle. The big down side is that you can't put anything other than a factory speaker in there using the stock bracket.

Unless you come across a working factory speaker and bracket, the most simple way to mount something else there is to remove the dash pad, drill holes for the speaker through the dash, and put the threaded ends down. As long as you use screws with very flat heads, it should be totally hidden. The really bad part about doing this is you'll probably need to pull the dash frame out of the car to do this since I don't think there's enough room with the windshield in to drill holes for the front screws.

I bought a 4 x 10 speaker as a replacement on one of my Ramblers within the last couple of years so they are available, just not common.   Joe

Actually they are very common as they are nearly identical to the standard speaker for early mustangs and cost under $20.  Secret Audio also offers a true split cone stereo speaker with two seperated speakers within the 4x10 configuration for around $100 and Pioneer offers a pair of 4x10 speakers for around $65 for the pair

That's a lot of good info guys. Thanks a lot. I suspected that there would have to be a bracket as I didn't see anything that could hold the speaker in place. I guess now I have to hunt one down.
