Adding to my previous post about the rear end in my '65 Ambassador screeching/slipping.

One of my options was finding a used one. Put out a wanted ad and a guy who has a '66 4 door Ambassador responded. Sounds like I could get the car for around scrap price.

Problem is that his car is a 232 6 cylinder with a 3 speed manual. My is a V8/auto. Are the rear ends a direct swap? I thought I read somewhere the ends of the torque tube are different between an 8 and a 6. How about the gear ratio between an automatic and a manual?

No. You do not want the 6 cylinder rear end.
You need a V8 (amc 20) rear.

Actually you should see more about the car, it may be a model 20.  1966 AMC used a heavier drivetrain in the Marlin and i believe the Ambo even with the 6 for that year.  transmission and rear were V8 level duty, regardless of actual engine.

That may be true, but chances are the ratio for a manual rear end is a good bit different from the automatic rear end.
