This makes sense, though seriously needs to be condensed. Good timing to get this info, as I'm doing a 401 Build and this step is needed soon.

Yep, Comp Cams says .005" to .010"
I used a McMaster Carr bolt which has a shorter hex head than the stock one so I actually had to shim with a washer to get the correct clearance. But in your case, I would just polish the bolt a little more. I show how I did it in this thread.

.003-.008 is a good range.
I think you will be ok if you tightened the bolts as tight as your final assembly will be
I would think aluminum cover should out expand the cam bolt even with the water pump on it and bolts through it but I cannot prove it |

SC397 I have a crane solid roller cam with rollmaster timing set. I polished bolt holding cam in place. I mounted timing cover with gasket in place. I just checked my cam end play with dial indicator and i get 0.002 at most. Is that ok or should i polish a little more on bolt. Timing cover had very little marks from previous contact with factory cam bolt 390 motor in SC had only 20,000 miles. I guess i could polish a little on timing cover. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Larry
