The stub doesn't need to come off, but you need to make sure the pilot HOLE is in the end of the crank and deep enough for the end of the input shaft of the newer model transmission, or the "nose" on the torque converter if an auto.

I think the volcano butt is cast as part of the crank so there should no parting line.
