Well somehow I broke the “Big Nut” Yoke in half on the rear pinion of my ‘65 American 440H. All of those 195.6 cubes of power through that slush box auto was too much for it haha!
Anyhow if anyone has one for sale or knows where I can buy one it would be greatly appreciated! Can’t stand not driving her! Thanks!

Wow. Yep, must be your heavy foot on that monster motor! eh?
I nad an axle shaft snap in half on a 1958 American, flat head automatic. When my mother borrowed to to buy groceries (it was ~ 1977). Failed when she put it into D in the parking lot. (Doing hole shots I assume.) After replacement, it had a long time flaw and just decided to part. Can you post pics of the failure? Do you know how/why it failed? It's interesting, but you have my sympathy, it's probably scarce. I may have one. The only catch is that I literally moved all my old parts into a large pile as a shed is being built where the stuff was piled. If it's not "on top" I will have to wait to re-move the pile to find it. I'm fairly sure I have a good-used. |

OUCH! Wow, that's some bad pinion angle to do that sort of damage. YOu can get 190 ft/lbs of torque out of that little motor, and and crazy low RPMs. It falls over flat at 4000 rpm, stock, but torque, not a problem!
The whole driveline is not that rugged or heavy duty. It was designed in and used on cars in the 60 to 80 hp days. 125 HP and 200 ft/lbs, as modest as that seems now, regularly does in T96 transmissions in modern usage patterns. These are very old cars, they are not modern at all. THey're Nashcans, not AMCs really. My iron pile is compromised by construction, but I will see if I can find it in the top layers. It iwll be a couple weeks before I get to (oh fun) re-stack it all in it's new home. |

I broke a few of those years ago. Then I learned that the yoke must be fastened to the spline, with the correct measurement from the housing. At the time, the yoke was still available at the AMC dealer for $95. I believe I used a product called "Loctite for splines" or something similar.
