Hyopthetical 196x conversation, customer car on a lift at the dealers... "We found the vibration, worn U-joints, normal at 75,000 miles. It will cost $200" "WHAT!?" "We have to change the driveshaft, yoke and both U-joints, and rebalance it, because reasons." |

WOW!! Thanks! 1.010 bearing caps -- well I'm glad I didn't throw this stuff away. I'll go back and re-measure the yoke and driveshaft. I also bought at the Las Vegas meet a NOS auto trans yoke, new in box! I assumed it was 1.000''... but I will go measure! Sheesh will mysteries never end... don't answer that :-) Thanks for the sleuthing Frank! |

I did not read the whole thread. I might have a big nut drive shaft in my storage. It would have been removed from a 64 American convertible. Let me know if someone needs me to look for it. Joe

Okay... I found the answer! Looking in the 60-65 parts book. Part group number is 9.104. Notes say that the 60-63 yoke and bearing has 1" caps if unmarked, has the word "Detroit" on it with 1.10" bearing caps. Apparently either could be used. No mention of spline count, but I bet one is 14 and one 23. Pages 1036 and 1037 of the on-line catalog -- https://www.sr-ix.com/AMC/Parts-Catalog-1960-1965/Book/1036.html That was a time when AMC had more than one source for outside parts, like using Wagner brakes on some cars and using Autolite electrics on the L-head 196, Delco on the 196 OHV. Reasoning was an existing contract could be more easily added to/modified if the other company had an issue supplying parts.

The "big nut" yoke (driveshaft, if you prefer) was used from 1950-55 in the Nash Rambler and from 58-63 in the Rambler American. All the Ameircans I've had (61-63 models) used the same 1" cup u-joints, I couldn't say about the splines, but I do recall mixing 61 and 63 shafts due to dinging one enough to throw it off balance. I doubt I changed the yoke though. All the listings at RockAuto say 1" bearing caps, 58-63. For 65 they list one with two 1" caps and two 1.125" caps. That is an oddity! I have no way to check the 50-55 parts. Of course I wouldn't count on those listings as being 100% accurate. They are from current parts catalogs, and we have all experience "catalog consolidation" issues, where whoever is editing the catalogs or making the parts make some (unchecked!) assumptions....

I measured taper and threads on the new 14-spline yoke. I put a pair of 6" Starrett rules on the taper, squared them. Major diam is the fat end of course, 'minor' is at the end of the 6" rules so smaller than the actual part but more length to minimize measurement error.
Major diameter: 1.354" Minor diameter: 0.966" Length of taper: 6" Taper is 1.854 degrees or .776" per foot That's pretty close to N.P.T. pipe thread taper of 3/4" per foot, but probably not close enough. Threads are 11.5 threads per inch, via my pitch gauge. That is definitely not pipe thread (14 TPI). Doesn't sound like a thing to make at home. Edited by tomj - Dec/28/2021 at 8:54pm |

Most of my spares are 61 to 63, but the U-joints should all be the same 1.000" cups. I've never heard of 1305 type U-joints with 1.008" cups. It's just so weird.
I don't have a hole plug set to chek with, I measured across the inside with Starrett calipers, carefully as I could, and it was 1.008" all the way around. If I thought they were stretched I'd pitch 'em. |

Wondering if your larger one is for the 61-63 convertible?

Yeah I bought it. I'll measure thread and pitch tomorrow. I have an old one (also 14 spline) with oddly oversize Ujoint cap holes that I don't understand. 1.000" caps fall through; but it measures as 1.008" and ROUND, both. And a driveshaft with the same issue, oversized and round, no belling or ovalling. All boiled out and clean.
