No holes for a puller on either gear and the manual was not helpful. This is from a '58 OHV.
How to I get at least the cam gear off? Thanks! |

Refer to AMC Cuss Word Chart J-56432312413424534635656456546 for the appropriate incantations.
Both gears are slip fit, not pressed tight. I'm sure they are gooped and gunked on there good. I forget how I did it, but do not recall excess cussage or difficulty. Bonk the big gear with a plastic hammer or equiv, lightly. Cobble up fulcrums on the block plate, pry against the chain to dislodge the cam gear. I think there's a machined spacer with an oil groove, you don't wanna nick that up. Once you get it to move .010" it will come off. Given that it's all worn (if indeed it is) there should be enough slack in the worn chain to move one gear then the other. |

If gentle prying doesn't work I typically resort to using a wedge. I'd try 4 wood framing wedges ($1.50 at Home Depot). Slide two inverted (narrow end facing each other) behind the cam gear and equally placed on the opposite side do the same. Tap the outer thicker ends simultaneously and alternate between sides when tapping.

Thanks Guys! It did the trick!
I've extracted two pistons & rods after lifting the crank out and both had cracked rings. Cylinder walls look okay so far. |
