    Posted: Nov/24/2020 at 9:12pm
Guys -

I'm about to re-install the 73 TF727 back in the AMX, however I have a question on the
convertor install.

How far back does the convertor go onto the splines?  The reason I'm asking is no matter how I align
the notches and rotate the convertor, the convertor bosses stick out beyond the plane of the bellhousing.

Should the convertor bosses stick out or should the entire convertor be contained within the plane of the bellhousing?

I did put a piece of sheetmetal across the bellhousing and marked how far they are forward and it looks like it's about 5/16" to about 3/8"

A mopar website on the trans talks about the bosses being recessed about 1/2", so currently I'm not even close.  May have to fight with the convertor some more......

Better to ask know than find out the hard way I didn't seat the convertor all the way :)

Thanks!

Steve

Was the converter originally from this trans?

Whups should have included that detail.

It’s a custom 10” converter with anti ballooning plates
from Continental Convertor.

Thanks!

The trans pump drive is the last of 3 things that need to align when installing the converter.
imho yes, the pads should be recessed about 1/2 below the trans case flange.
The pump drive is only 2 lugs on the converter snout and take a bit to get to engage.
Sometimes it can turn the pump gear when it's against it while turning the converter to get it to align.
Remove the converter, use a flashlight to get an idea of the pump drive lug locations in the trans.
Then after the 1st 2 'clunks', which are the splines, avoid pushing the converter snout against the pump gear while turning to align and get that last 3rd 'clunk' when the pump drive engages.

As I remember it too; clunk, clunk, .... clunk. Three sets to engage.

Shouldnt be difficult to engage properly as described above. Are you sure the converter is a non lock-up unit?

Look at the centernshaft on the trans. Is there a hole drilled through?

Thanks for the info.  It's that last "clunk" that I can't seem to get, although, not pushing on the convertor after the first two should help.

Pretty sure it's not a non-lockup convertor and it all was working before I removed the trans for a gasket/seal service.

It's been years since I've removed the trans....

I'm used to the 4 speed in the Javelin where the main thing I worry about is whether the throwout bearing might fall off the fork when re-installing the trans :)

Will check on that hole in the shaft though.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say thank you for providing the info on getting that Convertor back on correctly :)

Seems to work a lot better knowing to expect
three clunks as well as not pushing too hard
to get that last clunk.

Turned the pump until the two “teeth” were horizontal
as a reference, then slid the Convertor on until the
first clunk.  Then slowly rotated it with slight pressure
until the next clunk and it slid forward a bit.   This is
where I kept getting stuck.  The final clunk came as I
rotated the Convertor, rocking slightly back and forth
with very little pressure.  That’s when it fully engaged
and the convertor bosses were positioned about a half
inch within the bellhousing.

Thanks!

Steve
