"47" Years, and Counting....

"Today, the '74 is '47"....

Photo from exactly "47" years ago, that I took on Tuesday, July 16, 1974, the day that Linda and I picked up her brand new '74 Javelin....
Fast forward, and Linda is still "Cruising" and "Listening" to those "8-Track Tunes"....

"Hooker AMC"....
In the past, I have made mention of the Dealership where Linda special ordered her '74 Javelin, and also where my parents' bought my younger sister, Debbie, her '74 Javelin, both from Hooker AMC, Sherman, Texas....
I have also made mention that Linda has kept "EVERY" piece of paperwork associated with her Javelin, since the day she special ordered it....
Today, Linda was looking thru some old boxes and found another item related to her Javelin....
It is a faded Newspaper Article, dated May 5, 1974, from the Sherman Democrat Newspaper, on Hooker AMC and the 2 brothers, A.R. and Howard Hooker, and their acquisition of the Dealership from Jim Pollard....

"Twas an AMC Night”….

‘Twas the Night before Christmas, and you see,
there sat in the corner, a classic old AMC....

Linda’s ‘74 Javelin, near ready to go,
to all of next seasons’ Cruise Nites and Car Shows….

Its' slick Plum body, with a white side stripe,
black vinyl interior, the seats are just right....

A pistol grip shifter coming up through the floor,
now hooked to a 727 auto for sure....

It sits with the hood up, not quite running yet,
the problem elusive, but simple I bet....

The three-sixty V-8 of legend and lore,
“Why won’t you run? I can’t take it no more”....

Now freshly rebuilt, this elephant mill,
just thinking about it gives me a chill....

All of that horsepower, all of that torque,
I can’t make it run, I feel like a dork....

We're about to turn in, and go off to bed,
thinking a good sleep should help clear our heads....

When ever so slightly, We hear someones’ laughter,
and jingle bells ringing, and hooves pitter-patter....

“Is this for real?” We thought to ourselves,
could it be, the Jolly Old Elf?....

Linda and I opened the side door and had a look out,
the sleigh that we saw removed any doubt....

Across the street, Santa was making the rounds,
rooftop to rooftop, in leaps and bounds....

Then he was gone, but the sleigh still remained,
for what happened next, I’ll have to explain....

As we turned around, what do you know,
Santa Claus himself, the star of the show....

Was standing there, grinning, right there by the car,
his pearly whites glistening, reflecting like stars....

I stammered “S-Santa?!” And he started to snicker,
I took a deep breath to calm down my ticker....

He was checking it over, no angle undone,
and then he said nicely, “Might I hear the Javelin run?”....

I hated to say it, had no other choice,
this problem I had with the Javelins’ voice....

I wish that we could, but I’m afraid not tonight,
It’ll turn over, but it simply won’t light....

I know it’s ignition, of this I’m sure,
but I’m out of ideas, do you have a cure?….

He pondered a moment, then scratched his chin,
“I have an idea, why don’t you jump in?”....

I climbed in the Javelin, as he fiddled around,
and he said “Aha! You have a bad ground”….

This wire on the coil should be attached here,
and over he moved it, without any fear....

“Hit it!” he said, his grin growing wide,
I turned the key and let out a sigh....

I wiggled the shifter and hit the ol’ key,
and it fired up at once, Linda howled with glee!....

The dual exhaust was so loud it rattled the walls,
Santa yelled over it, “I bet this thing hauls!”....

I killed the Javelin, and jumped out, unable to speak,
Santa had fixed it with one little tweak!....

“You know about cars?”
I finally asked....

“Oh, yes!” he replied,
My veins run with gas....

“I work but one night, so with my spare time,
I tinker and wrench, it sharpens the mind”….

“I have a AMC collection that rivals the best,
It’s my preferred hobby when I am at rest”….

We shook his hand thank you, we nodded goodbye,
and with that he vanished in the blink of an eye....

As we went in to head off to bed,
We thought about everything Santa had said....

Turns out he’s a car guy,
and now that you know,

Perhaps you’ll see Santa,
at your next AMC Car Show!....

It was "8" years ago....9, April 2014....
The "Refurbishing" was nearly finished....
I had just picked up the Javelin from the Transmission Shop, after some basic servicing on the 727, and was taken it back to the Body Shop for a few miscellaneous items to be finished....
**It would be a few weeks later, on May 16, 2014, that Linda was handed the keys to her "Refurbished" Javelin....
