How can I tell a 304 from a 360 when in the vehicle? I have a new to me Jeep J10 and the PO said he did not know.. It is an 1985 has the 727 behind it.

The only way I know of is the get underneath it, the engine will have 304 or 360 cast on the side of the block. I think it is just behind the engine mounts

I'm told some of the later one's had 5.9 (as in litres which is a 360) but dunno when that happened. A stock V8 in 85 would have been a 360.

The 5.9l was 1991 only, but some with later 1990's have also reported the 5.9l casting.
The other thing to mention is that the J10 had the optional 401 in 1985. One just sold near me but they wanted way to much for a truck that needed the frame repaired. The original 401 was what they were asking the big $ for.

the 401s last year was 1978.     How was it an option in 1985?    Could have been transplanted in there.

Stand corrected, 79 was when the 401 was discontinued. Must have been a transplant, though quite a popular one as I've seen just as many 401's in J10 - Honcho's and Gladiators as AMC cars.
There are also at least 5 Scouts with 401's near me that are transplants.
Still something to look for and a nice find if you do get one.

Not a stamping. 3 large raised numbers cast on both sides.

It should have numbers as Heavy has stated like this in these locations:
https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/amc-360-with-a-5-9l-casting-help-me-identify-this-please.1517553/
It should be 5.9, 360 or possibly 304 or 401.
If it's completely blank and no signs of the numbers being ground off, then it's likely an early Service Block - rare animal.
