I have an '01 Cherokee w/straight 6. I'd like to swap in a 304. Will it bolt up to the tranny or will I have to find an adapter?
Thanks,

You will need to balance the flexplate for the '72 up V8. I don't know if it will clear the brake booster, etc. I was looking at doing that with my '89 Comanche but TOO many projects. If it's a Grand Cherokee, the trans won't last long.

Hmmm... some Grand Cherokees used a Chrysler trans (42RE?) with the 4.0L, but I think those were only mid to late 90s. They switched back to the AW4 after a couple years due to trans problems.

The AW4 has a cable from the throttle linkage to the trans. I don't think the Chrysler models have that TV cable. You may want to look up how to ID the trans. The AW4 has a removable bell housing, the Chrysler models have the bell cast onto the trans body.

I would love to do it to ours but you can't swap in an older motor. Won't pass smog. How is VA?

I don't think I have ever seen an AW4 in a Grand Cherokee. Lots of them around here with bad transmissions too!

AW4 was only used in '93 in the Grand Cherokees. 42RE is weak. They should have made a 45RE for them but settled on a slightly beefier version. The 5.2L got 42RE the first couple years and had a TON of problems (most only made it past 50,000 with proper maintenance and babying) The overdrive dropping out and taking out the rear of the case seems to be the most common.

All the AW4s used a TVS cable. HO moved it to the front of the throttle body ('91 up). Renix was on the back (When I converted my Comanche to auto I found out '87 throttle bodies didn't have the bracket already in place)

The only problem with this swap is that the 01 4.0L EFI engine has a good bit more power than the 304. Hope you plan on building the 304 up a good bit, otherwise you're better off with a hopped up 4.0L -- and I think you would be better off anyway.
