So, results of the diode experiment: it didn't work.
Tried it on the orange wire, south of the VR; reversed the diode and tried again. Tried it on the positive portion of the coil. It wouldn't let the car start! Tried it the other direction and you know what happened. Then, I tried a new ignition switch, since that's easy and no change. I'm going to have to drop the dash façade and do some troubleshooting. Thanks again to all who assisted in this endeavor. I'll be in touch next month.

Well, "next month" arrived early, thanks to my good buddy Al Tyler, who came
over on a rainy day to help diagnose the issues. Hard to believe after quite a few intelligent eyes gazed upon the relay installation, but it appeared to be wired incorrectly. After fixing the incorrect wiring and adding a 6A 100V diode to the + coil side, the engine finally shut down when the key is turned to the off position!

Bikerfox,
Any chance you have detailed pics of the wiring of your 70 Javelin engine bay? I have a mess on my hands and I'm confused by the wiring diagram . Especially the hookups to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the coil.Ill treat you to a case of beer if you can help. Tony

Tony--do you still need pics? Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Been gone for a few days and haven't checked messages. LMK.

Tony,
Searching for the elusive resistance wire produced these two results. Pls. read them. Also, in case you want to go the relay route, the last link explains how to do so. |

Diodes can go bad in the alternator or regulator and cause power to back-feed through to the ignition coil. The resistance of the alternator warning light in the dash plus other resistors in the system are enough to stop it normally. Engaging the parking brake creates a ground through the switch on the parking brake pedal assembly that might draw enough current sway to stop it.
