I've seen this questions before, but couldn't find the answer with a search.
In 68, I know AMX seats were reclining, but was the headrest standard or an option? Thanks in adavnce. Dave |

This is true, but virtually all automakers put them on starting with '69 production ahead of the January 1 date. All '69 AMXs and Javelins came with headrests. In the '68 year, they were an option.

Yes, they were a dealer accessory as well. Some of you will recall that AMC was one of the first cars-not just to have reclining seats as an option-but to offer a headrest option. And back in the day, you could get a headrest on one or both front seats. I have a "lounge tilt" bucket seat for my '62 American passenger seat, and it has a headrest. But I think maybe as far back as '58 or '59 you could get headrests too. |

More than one thing became law in Canada and USA on jan 1, 1968. Headrests for front seats in passenger vehicles and Vin tags visible through the driver side of the windshield. 1969 is not when this happened. My Javelin was bought on day one September 26, 1967 predating both of these requirements. * It would appear that the planethouston website had at one point incorrectly stated 1968 for both Canada and USA about the headrests.* Edited by maximus7001 - Jan/16/2022 at 3:43pm |

If you read down, here's a fairly good summary of what requirement happened when. Headrests were definitely a '69 item. In brief, the move towards auto safety regulation meant these things in these model years: 1967-Dual master cylinders, some sort of safer steering column (collapsible or Ford's big 'cushion' in the center of the steering wheel), and more! 1968-Jan. 1 VIN tag on dash, 2 front shoulder belts. Lap belts for all seating positions. Side marker lights or reflectors., 4 way hazard warning lights, and more! Many manufacturers made these standard with '68 production, though at least the shoulder belts weren't required until Jan. 1). 1969-headrests (most automakers made them standard before they were required-Jan 1. 1969) 1970-I had forgotten about the side markers AND reflectors! This explains why our '70 AMX's/Javelins/Rebels/Ambos got those large, generic, tacked on side markers!
