Why not weld that bung into the top tank?

The radiator tank? It's a brand new brass/copper tank and currently installed. Really don't want to go to that extent.

Found this video and just wanted to share... This is a cheaper way of doing the hose adapter. I really wish I would've seen this before I bought the advance adapter hose adapter. This would've saved me a good $60-70 bucks... So don't do what I did... If you're having a hard time making the little adapter ring like I was... Do what this guy says instead.... I didn't think about this at all... Very silly oversight on my part. These are all over eBay.... Although I like my version... It could've been done cheaper had I saw that video sooner. Just thought I'd report that the hose adapter I created worked well today. The fans turn on and off nice. We did break the center connector on the relay by accident. It apparently wasn't seated correctly and when I tried to reseat it... It just fell apart in my hands. I'll have to buy a new connection this week.
Anyway... Thanks for everyone's help and putting up with my belly aching!!!!

I used an adapter in the hose also, and installed with the sensor facing down, so it would most likely be in contact with coolant more often, in case of air pockets in hose giving false reading and fans not functioning.

For those interested in the electric cooling fans, be sure you have the alternator to run them and you other accessories especially at idle in traffic. I found having to sit in hot summer with A/C and cooling fans on high, that the battery was drained down, as the 12si I was running wouldn't hold 12 volts at idle and barely 13 at higher speed. Now I run a cs144 140amp and at idle now am at 13.5 volts, and 14.6 at higher speeds.

Definitely a good idea to make sure you have enough power!! Older 60s and 70s cars (with alternator, not generator -- generators are only about 30A and don't charge at idle!) have 35-40A
alternator stock, with a 55-60A as an HD option. The 55A might cut it,
but anything over 60A should for sure, assuming a pretty much
"normal" load like I have (see last paragraph). GM 10SI models
have a "bladed" fan and came in 37, 42, 55, 61, and 63A models. A 12SI
has a flat plate fan on front and came in 56, 66, 78, and 94A models.
The 78A was used on many full size cars, loaded vehicles often came with
the 94A. Any 66/78/94 should be fine. If not, there may be an issue
with the alternator or the battery, and/or the battery cables (they
corrode internally and the connections may have some corrosion). 140A is way overkill -- unless you have some high powered electric devices. I'm running a 63A 10SI alternator (original equipment from a loaded 83 Concord) with a 4.0L EFI engine, the Contour fans, AC (AC clutch, and one fan runs any time AC is on), and a Kenwood head unit (no amps, just four speakers). I also have power seats (rarely adjusted) and halogen headlights. I have no issues at all. Edited by farna - Sep/08/2021 at 6:13am |
