Manual or power steering?   You can adjust a manual box some, but with that much slop it's probably just worn out.  Since the steering is GM/Saginaw, steering boxes are easy to source.

Not hard to figure out. Get a second person to rock the steering wheel. Crawl under and see what is and isn't moving.

I have slop in my steering just as you describe.  Best first scenario would be to look like Heavy 488 describes.  But you can grab the steering shaft from the engine compartment & turn and look at the components at the same time.

The manual steering is pretty simple (if this is your case), a loose connection at the firewall can provide slop, the steering shaft is long and there are with unions that go bad, but most likely it is the gear box that is worn out.

There are idler arms and links that can be effected as well but for 2-3 inches of steering wheel movement, the weak spot is the gear box.

I did get under the jeep and everything looks good and tight ,I adjusted the gear box by getting loose a lock nut on top of the box and screwed in the screw on top . I did this a few times was not sure how far to adjust this but it took up 90% of the slop. Steers great now
