Just got my 232 to fire today but not for long , I fouled out the plugs but I noticed gas all around of the base of the carb, I have the base gasket, looks like it’s leaking through the main shaft of the carb on both sides. The carburetor is a carter wcd 2 barrel.
Thanks

The carb needs to have new bushings installed on its shaftway. I had the same issue with my WCD, so I sent it to CarburetorUSA.com and it came back looking and functioning like new.

Thanks for the info, I bought this car with the motor disassembled so I’m finding things out while I go, this carburetor looks like it was rebuilt but the lower throttle body that the shaft goes through is leaking every time the shaft moves. Is the base gasket the only between the carburetor and manifold?

Are you sure the float is set up properly and not sticking? Even with a worn shaft there shouldn't be much gas coming out.

Had the same issue. I second what Rogues said: bushings in the shaft should help clear up slop. The float level was also far too high in my carb. Took some trial and error to get it low enough but those two fixes cleared it up. Good luck.

The carb is actually getting a bit better after running it, I did retorque the intake and exhaust manifolds, maybe I’m getting better vacuum now and that’s lessening the leak. The exhaust is giving me problems right now, I have this exhaust leak in the area where the 2 manifolds bolt together, I can see a slight gap on the side going towards the motor. I tried torquing the manifold again and it didn’t get any better. I replaced the exhaust manifold while reassembling it because the old one had a missing ear and a stud that was previously was helicoiled snapped off. Do they make a thicker gasket or is there another option?

I see Rockauto has intake to exhaust gaskets available in more than one brand. Normally one starts with the bolts loose and slowly tighten them up all together bit by bit. That way the manifolds can slide around a bit as they get snugged up to each other.
