I have a 1975 CJ 5 with a 232. 3.73 gearing , T-14 transmission, 33 inch tires. It runs great but is a little underpowered and I am trying to fight off an engine upgrade. Might think about re-gearing it as well. Looking for advice on camshaft choices for a mostly street but frequent off-road Jeep. Combination of mud and rocks. Nothing crazy extreme but more power is good. Thanks!

With a 232 I don't see any worthwhile return on an investment

If this is the plan, most Jeep Forum reviews seem to go for the Comp CL68-231-4 or CL68-232-4.
With so many variations on tires, gearing and use, it's difficult to pin the group down. The 231 has more mid range highway, the 232 has more grunt for off road. These are not race camshafts that a hill climbing mudder would use. Most seem pleased with either one, so toss a coin. As Heavy states, your not going to have a huge difference on a 232 over the factory camshaft, but these will be a noticeable difference. typo correction. Edited by Trader - Mar/23/2023 at 11:15am |

Cam specs that they have listed may be for the later more common 1.6 rocker lift. If you have the early shaft rocker, then they are 1.5.

Crower also makes camshafts for the 232. I put one in a spare engine but it is still a spare so I have no idea on how good it is.
You might do good by putting on a 4.0 L head and get the better breathing. Some people have done that mod.

232 is a good engine,
it's pretty much an underbored 4.0L (3.75x3.5 vs 3.875x3.41), so look at what works on the 4.0L and you'll get the Jeep's engineers advice on what works. The factory went with a pretty tame camshaft for the 87-95's, and then made it a little smaller for 96+. Instead they opened up the head (91-95 & 96-99 being the best two heads), and also used a tubular exhaust manifold, since the junkyards are filled with 4.0L heads, I'd find the best 91-98* head I could get, and wouldn't bother with the cam unless I thought the original cam was worn. *99 XJ/TJ heads heads should still be good, but 00-01 XJ/TJ/WJ heads are crack prone & have smaller exhaust ports, I believe 99 WJ's also got the crack prone head so I'd suggest looking for 91-98 to avoid the later crack prone heads all together. Where do you need power the most? (Street/off-road/mud/dirt?) I'd say a 3spd L6 on 33's with 3.73's needs gears more than anything, an AX-15 or NV3550 swap would give you around a 4:1 first gear, and overdrive, but you really need 4.10's or 4.56's axle gears as well to be able to wheel on 33's An AX-15/NV3550 + D300 might be too long for a CJ5 though, especially if it's lifted for 33's. If it's for offroading, Teraflex used to make a 3.15 low range gear set for Spicer 20's, which could have helped, but I think it's discontinued now. |

If it's a street Jeep,
the cheapest/easiest way to better acceleration would be smaller/lighter tires, 33x10.5's on aluminum wheels can cut weight vs 33x12.5's on steel wheels, even 32x11.5's are lighter, but shorter tires start to bring the highway RPMs up with 3.73's and no OD. |

Lot of weight and lack of aerodynamics to put on an engine that may produce100 horse and torque on a good day.

I was under the impression that the 67 232 Rambler American engine that I have is rated at 155 HP.

Thake that number with a really big grain of salt. Any test before 72 is a gross power rating + fudge factor.
