So I had a wheel cylinder leak on my '74 Hornet (Bendix, stock 9 x 2.5 drum brakes up front). I was surprised to find it very hard to locate new shoes. (Back ones are easy to find!)

I had to buy a set online. I got Wagners. Looking at them, the lining length on all 4 shoes is identical. There is no Primary/Secondary shoe difference.

What do I do? I've always understood the Primary/Secondary brake lining difference to be important.

Call me a heretic but I've had numerous brake shoes contaminated with brake fluid or gear oil.  Washed them thoroughly with gasoline, set them in the sun to bake out, light sanded the surfaces, and reinstalled them.  But I am a heretic.

Edit:  Found this set on ebag, they seem to be the typical shorter primary shoe.

Same here.

What Wagner number do you have?

348. Front brakes are 9 x 2.5 on all 6 cylinder Hornets and Gremlins and Javelins. That second link isn't helpful, because it shows the 348 number, then calls them 9x2, and lists them for '70 AMX....not!

I could not find a 348 Wagner shoe set.  I did find some listings at Parts Geek and if the photos are accurate, it shows what appears to be the typical shorter primary shoes.

Don't know what to tell you.

Thanks, Roger. I think I will return them and search out the proper ones. I don't see any way a system designed to work with a primary and secondary shoe is going to work properly with matching shoes.

Relining is always an option, and probably cheaper than you think.

Have you checked with the AMC-specifiec suppliers yet?

Yes relining is an option. I had some done locally by an old school brake shop last year. I can give you their info if it is of interest.

Re-lining may be the only option very shortly. Nothing wrong with the practice when done correctly and it was certainly done back in the day - it will keep the cars on the road.

Thanks guys. I can get the proper shoes....just have to order them and was trying to put the brake system back together over the weekend.

I'm just disappointed that a name brand, fairly recently made all new set of brake shoes is either faulty, or not according to spec (when it says right on the box-"application specific" or something to the effect!

Just a stupid thought, you have your old shoes, could you trim off material on the new shoes to match your old shoes?  In effect, make a pair of primary shoes from what you have?
