So I need to buy some new rear tires.
I have been running 275/60/15 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Pro tires, they seem to be a bit hit and miss off the line, I have them on 8" rims, which I think are a bit narrow. Looking at the contact patch on the tire, it's about 9" wide on the driver's side and only 8.5" on the passenger side, more weight on the driver's side perhaps plus that tire is worn down a bit more. I've been thinking of 255/60/15 drag radials, but they seem pretty thin on the ground at the moment. I figure they might work a little better on the 8" rim than the 275 and the smaller diameter might help a touch with gearing. At the moment it looks like my other option is a 27" x 9" x 15" M&H Slick. I originally ran 26" x 10" slicks, but feel I will run out of RPM at the end of the track, so need something a little taller, but 28" might be to big to fit into the wheel well even though the 275/60/15 radial is theoretically 28" tall, it's tight. Decisions?

Since it's a dedicated race car I would without question put real drag slicks on it.

I'm pretty much sold on the slicks as well, the only downside is that we have a little bit of 1/8th mile radial racing that I would miss out on, but there is plenty of other stuff to do. I'd consider running the 275 radial again, but I'd probably want to put it on a 10" rim. Hopefully the slick will be a bit more consistent off the line than the radial.

I suggest a 28x9 M/T Pro Bracket Radial. They hook like no other, a little faster, they don't grow like a regular slick & last a long long time. I run the 28x10.5s with a 10" rim. I NEVER question traction.

M/T are what most bracket racers around here run as well. I can tell you if you want the contact patch to be flat you need to use a rim 1" wider than the advertised slick width. You can run a 28" x 9" on an 8" rim, but you soon notice the centers wearing a lot faster than the outside edges.

The 10.5s are perfect on a 10" rim. I'm not sure what M/T recommends for the 8" slick. I have my bias ply 28x9s on a 10" rim & they fit nicely.

Will a 28" slick fit in the stock 74 Gremlin wheel well? The 275/60/15 radials are supposed to be 28" and they are pretty tight, they do rub on the rear of the wheel well occasionally, I sort of feel the 28" slick will be bigger.
There doesn't seem to be much stock down here, so at the moment it's either 26" or 28". My other option would be a 27 x10.5 Hoosier Quick Time Pro (9" tread width), still waiting to see if they are available.

Crossed another thing off my list of jobs this weekend, that's about 4 out of 20 completed now. The upshot of this is that now my reverse lights work for the first time ever: They would have originally operated from the switch on the transmission, but that has never been connected, so now they run off the new shifter. Also found somewhere to keep my customs parts collection: |
