I’m getting ready to attach a Borg Warner M11 auto transmission to my 343 V8 and was wondering if there are any tips or tricks to this. This is my first time dealing with this type of trans and I can see it’s going to be a little trickier than other transmissions since the torque converter has threaded studs which have to be aligned with the holes in the flexplate and the inspection/access cover in the midplate is quite small. I’m assuming I will have to turn the crank at the front of the engine to access each of the four converter studs and get a nut on each of them and tighten them up, since once the tranny is bolted to the engine the flexplate teeth are no longer accessible to use a tool to turn the engine.

You should be able to rotate the torque converter easily. It doesn't do much until the engine is spinning oil around inside.

Thanks for the response. I got it buttoned up, but the trickiest thing I found was getting the fine thread nuts started on the torque converter studs. I would definitely recommend chasing the studs prior to bolting the trans to the engine (I had the trans and torque converter rebuilt and the assumption was that they would have chased the threads when rebuilding the torque converter - never assume). One other tricky part was getting the washer and nut in place on the torque converter studs - I dropped a nut and it went right inside. Unlike other transmission designs that have a large inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing, if you drop something inside and couldn’t get it out you’re going to have to remove the trans from the engine. Fortunately, I was able to get the nut out by using an old hacksaw blade with two thin magnets taped to it.

Before I rebuilt the engine I unbolted the transmission. It was a hassle removing the BH bolts. Removed the engine with a cherry picker. Had the M12 tranny rebuilt locally. The owner of the shop said to bolt the transmission to the engine first, then install the engine and M12 together, from underneath the AMX. He said it is extremely difficult to bolt the M12 from under the car to the mounted engine. Took his advice and glad I did. While the engine cross member was out, rebuilt the front suspension, too.
