Your best bet would be to use a template rather than trying to work with dimensions. I could help with that. PM me if needed.
The aluminum mesh (called aluminum wire cloth) used to make the original screen mesh grilles is still available. You can get it at McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com). The number is 9227T155. The specs are .187 wire opening (1" area has 4 x 4 openings), .063 wire diameter. A 3' x 5' sheet is $205.20 There are probably other sources that offer it as well. Maybe you could find a local supply house.

sounds like somebody should start reproducing these grills if the mesh is that close to original? I know others have been repairing them. Why not just get the template and produce a bunch to sell?

Thanks for the info on the stainless steel mesh for the grill. I've been looking for some.
Do you know where I can find the truss head rivets? I haven't been able to find the right diameter head. |

Thank you for the info on the mesh. I'm going to have to look Around and see if I can source something a little cheaper. If i can't I'll have to start saving my pennies. I'm not looking for an exact replica. It would cost a fortune to get my car back into "restored" shape. Right now I'm shooting for "driving and looks good". So I can cheat a little. But I have it filed away now just in case I can ever find a beat up one I can afford and can rebuild.
The main thing I might have trouble with is bending the aluminum L chanel to make the marker rings and corners. Mine might have to be a more squared off version. I'll have to see. I'm usually pretty good at finding a good work around for problems. We'll have to see. But my work uses lots of aluminum and stainless steel, so I might be able to talk around and see what some of the people I work with can come up with. If nothing else I can maybe cut out little pie shapes out of the L Chanel so it will bend round by hand and see if one of the welders can weld it up. The just grind flat and polish it up. Lots to think on. But now that I have measurements I can start shopping around and hash out ideas. You guys have really been amazing in helping me get thus started. |

I should be able to figure out the angle from center. I'll just match the the angle on the front edge of the hood. Should get me pretty close to a stock one for me. But if any one wants to take a protractor out to their grill, I won't complain. Or set one that is off the car one the floor with the outer ends contacting the floor and measure up from the floor to the apex of the center point. Then I can do the math and figure out the angle using simple geometry. But u should be close enough one way or the other. |

All you need to figure out angle of the center is the length from top center to top corner and cut two pieces of scrap wood or cardboard (thin is best) of equal measurement of the length given. Then take the measurement from top corner to top corner (which is smaller). Then butt the two sections of wood end to end and bend at their junction until their oposite ends are the same distance apart as in the corner to corner measurement. I'm guessing around 15°
Basically your making a triangle using the measurements, to find angles. Edited by 304-dude - Dec/20/2017 at 9:03pm |
