I can't get the time slip cause it's in the car and that is still parked for winter. 69 Rambler, 426 street engine NA, 10.2 compression, hydraulic roller, set up as a true street car with a 5 speed, heads up against a hellcat 2 passes and it could not catch me. To be fair he was catching at the finish line. Rambler best ET 11.05 @ 126 mph in street trim as driven to the track.

Just so you know. (in a last resort scenario for you I guess) With the EDDY aluminum heads and 9:1 COMP. You can run 87 octane just fine. aluminum heads quench better than cast irons. still wouldn't go above 5500 rpm just to be safe.

corners wont be hard to beat out most of todays vehicles. especially all the top heavy crossovers and hatchbacks. old cars are great for handling especially AMCs with the lightweight advantage and bottom heavy structure. that's one thing AMC had over the other big three of the day: maneuverability, sure the 440 six pack charger or roadrunner was fast but it was so unwieldy and heavy and couldn't handle auto cross like a AMX or Rambler can.

BTW I'm not dissing a hellcat. It is truly remarkable what the new technology has done, and I am the first to say that. In no way is the Rambler comparable to a Hellcat when it comes to everything a new car can do.
But I am saying applying a little modern technology to our antiques and they can work very well too. The Rambler with the 5 speed drives pretty good, decently quiet on the highway with the OD, decent mileage, and is real fast. A LS is and impressive engine and way ahead of a traditional SBC and has lots of very good advantages. Amazing how good the modern heads are; was looking at a truck engine LT (I think, the newer LS replacement whatever the letter code is) the other day and I was really impressed. However there is not much wrong with our AMC's, they are just not for the cookbook people. Fundamentally the AMC is just like the LS: a 9.2" deck true wedge shallow valve angle (15 LS, 18 AMC) pushrod engine with good architecture. Sorta like the LS copied AMC. Gotta admit that truck cylinder head was impressive. 30 years ago a pro racer would have give a body part - maybe even a testicle - for race heads that good, and this is on a pickup.

If my memory serves (which can be questionable), I remember my first outing at GAD, when it was still in Norwalk. I remember seeing this quiet little Rambler drive in with Canuck plates on it. Thought wow, quite a drive just for the show. Then it lines up to me on the dragstrip, and I thought how nice to see this sedate little American take a stroll down the strip for fun.
Then of course, you stomp my A$$ with that sedate little American...

Them things have a lot of power, and that is real obvious. The Rambler seems to use it's power to weight a little better in the first half of the track, but at the top end there is no escaping the pure HP.
Had the same experience against a pretty heavily modified LS7 Vette, he was catching at the finish line but could not. I think he had a better 60 foot than me but I passed him through the gears, but he almost caught me at the finish line.
And sorry for sidetracking the thread

I AM REALLY CURIOUS GUYS!!! As to what happened to the original post? Or more importantly, WHY? everytime there is a good thread started everyone (not all) feel the need to trash it with comments and stories about something else? I belong to several other forums and I can tell you that this forum is the WORST. We have many other categories to post in or the option of starting a new topic, but somehow this group (you know who you are) just loves to trash post beyond the original intent.
So can we please get back and stay on the topic? Tom
