Just curious...how much do you "change" the cam dynamics/performance when going from a 1.6 rocker to a 1.7? What do you gain and what do you lose?

Adding ratio increases lift but also changes the ramp ratio. Your #@0.050 will also increase. Think of this as a hybrid between a solid lifter vs roller camshaft gain on the valve lift but not the reduced friction at the camshaft/lifter interface.
Roller rockers with the increased ratio is normally the way to go as the rocker also see increased forces. And of course you need springs to accommodate the extra lift.

On a mid 9 sec 1/4 mile car I picked up about 1mph with a change to 1.7

I will throw this out there. There is a guy here that has a jeep grand wagoneer and he has a Erson TQ20 cam in it. That thing is really strong for such a heavy ride. It gets up and goes really good.

I had that cam in a mostly stock 360 AMX at 9.0 compression. The cam pulled strong to 5500 and had excellent torque off idle. It was advertised as 292 duration with .478 lift. At .050, it was 214 degrees on 111 lobe centers. The idle was very tame.

What is the stock AMC 360, 390, 401 rocker arm ratio,... guessing 1.5 ratio?

were they hydraulic lifters, flat tappits
