This is an FYI pic for another thread but I thought it might be of interest to others. I swapped the dead 998 in my '82 Eagle for a 727 and only had to exchange some minor external parts to make it work. Shift linkages and the passing gear assembly as well as the 727 dipstick tube.

I also went with the Grand Wagoneer NP229 (I have to swap the front yoke and the speedometer housing and I still need to hook up a low range lever.

What engine?

The 727 has a taller 1st than the 9xx, right? So you may lose crawl ratio and off-the-line acceleration

Since I put bigger tires on too (235/75/15s instead of stock 205s), I needed to change my gear ratio anyways. I have an XJ 8.25 with 3.08 gears and a non-vacuum front with 3.07s. I may eventually swap it for an AW4 (that's what we put in SOTE). The nice thing about having low range is towing. It's not going to do much serious offroading while I have it (just my driveway which qualifies as a Class 2 trail in winter)

Read the TSM's. lower ratios didnt come out until 1982. ALL 904,998,727's have the 2.45 ratios until 1982.

I'm not building one... was just curious.

Also, OP hasn't said what configuration of trans he's replacing.

Stock 258 for now. I replaced the 998 with a 727. The biggest thing to overcome is the extra mass of the 727.

The transmission in the Eagle died today, i found a 727 from an International Scout for sale here in Norway and will try to use it in the Eagle wagon.. The transmission in the Scout sat behind a amc 360
Hope for a plug and play install

The 727 shouldn't have the same low first gear as the 998 so it's not just the mass of the internals.
You need to use the shift lever from the 998.
The 727 is about 15mm longer but there's enough room in the cross member and shafts.
