I have the 998 non lockup trans. and putting it behind a 401 engine both are 1978 models. The convertor on the 998 has a bigger snout then the 727 that was behind the 401. The difference is very slight but it will not work. can the snout be turned down a small amount on the 998? Any advice is needed. This is in a Concord and do not want to hack the tunnel up for the 727. The car is mint and come with the 304. Thank you

The 78 401 most likely came out of a jeep with a turbo 400 in it. The crank would have a very thin sleeve in it because the 400 snout is slightly smaller than a torque flite converter

I had a 727 converter in my 998 if I remember correctly. I don't remember any dimensions being different. I do remember one brand having a hard time supplying me with the correct converter for some reason though. I think the slot in the "snout" of the converter wasn't cut in deep enough or something odd like that.
*edit* I believe it was actually a 904 converter. Edited by WhatISit - Aug/10/2022 at 8:09pm |

As it was said, jeeps with the th400 have a sleeve that has to be removed for a torqueflite

Your trying to get the pilot bearing out of the crank?
Take a piece of soft bread....yes a piece of bread from the kitchen. Ball it up and shove it into the pilot hole getting as much in as you can. Now get a flat face punch as close to the pilot hole size you can, and drive the bread into the hole with the punch and BFH. The bread will be forced in behind the pilot bearing and push the bearing out. Clean the bread out and insert the correct pilot bearing :) EDIT Wheat bread is more healthy.......just joking, as it does not matter which kind it is, but the softer more dense bread works better!

A 727 will fit the car without any hacking. You better beef up the 998 if your 401 is making over 400hp
